So, Annie has done really well off the CPAP. She has been breathing room air on her own and keeping all of her vitals where they should be. I went this morning to hold her. It was an awesome feeling to hold her again without the CPAP on her little face.
Today they increased her to 12 mL every three hours for her feeding! YAY! So now they have her food on a pump slowly giving it to her during a 30 minute time frame. She seemed like she was adjusting to it pretty well. They said as they increase her feeds, they will be adding a milk fortifier that has extra calcium, phosphorus, etc. that she needs.
They got the scan result back from her brain bleed that they did yesterday. The nurse practioner said that the Grade 1 brain bleed is still there on her left side of her brain. It has not gotten any worse and she does not have any additional bleeds which is good news. She said that it will begin to absorb and they are not worried about it. Babies take different amounts of time for them to go away and she said as long as her platelet count is fine (which it is) then they know that it will go away on its own. They will scan her again probably in a couple of weeks to check her progress.
Also, our nurse, Ruth said that probably in the next couple of days we could see Annie get moved to Level 2 status (which is one small step closer to going home). She said they may not physically send her to the Level II NICU since she is still small (only 2 lb. 6.3 oz), but she will be considered a "feeder-grower." The nurses have been teaching John and I how to be more responsible for Annie. For example, when we take her out of her isolette, we are being shown how to disconnect her leads that monitor her heart rate/oxygen. They told us that the nurses in NICU II expect parents to be more self-sufficient and to be able to take the babies out on their own and do more things without assistance. So I guess they are getting us ready for that!
Well, we still have a long road ahead. We don't know exactly how long, we just are taking it one step and one day at a time. We have truly been blessed with our special little miracle baby! Please keep praying for Annie to keep jumping over these NICU hurdles. Please also pray for the resolution of the Grade 1 brain bleed. Thanks so much for your love, support and prayers.
